MTA stands for Mineral Trioxide Aggregate. It’s a calcium silicate-based material used to protect the tooth’s nerve tissue, close openings in the root canal or seal the tip of the root.

Patients often call it “MTA treatment”. Strictly speaking, MTA isn’t a treatment in itself but a material used in several different treatments. Where and how it’s used depends on the tooth.

In this article we explain when MTA is used, how it’s applied, whether it can leak and how long it lasts.

The pulp is the nerve and blood vessel tissue inside the tooth. MTA is used to protect it and to seal the root area.

When Is MTA Used?

Dentists usually choose MTA for:

In its position statement on vital pulp therapy, the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) says calcium silicate-based materials such as MTA are better supported by evidence than the alternatives.

How Is MTA Placed?

The steps depend on the problem being treated. In general:

Rubber dam ile izole edilmiş dişte diş hekimi tedavi uyguluyor
A rubber dam isolates the tooth from saliva and keeps the working area clean.
  1. Examination and X-ray: we assess the nerve, root development and whether there’s infection around the tooth.
  2. Local anaesthetic and isolation: the tooth is numbed and isolated from saliva with a rubber sheet.
  3. Cleaning: the decayed tissue is removed. If the pulp is exposed, bleeding is controlled and the area disinfected.
  4. Placing the MTA: the powder is mixed with liquid and placed where needed. Because MTA sets in the presence of moisture, a damp cotton pellet and a temporary filling may be placed on top.
  5. Final restoration: the filling or crown is done in the same visit or the next one, depending on the plan.

MTA takes around three hours to set initially and days to reach full strength, so some cases need two visits. As the AAE also stresses, placing the final restoration without delay is important for success.

Advantages and Limitations of MTA

Limitations

Can MTA Leak? What Happens If It Does?

MTA is used precisely to create a seal. Problems usually come not from the MTA itself but from the restoration on top: its edge can open up, break or crack, letting bacteria back into the treated area.

Leakage can show up as:

Not every leak causes symptoms, which is why going to your recommended check-ups matters. If there’s a problem, an examination and X-ray come first. Depending on the cause, the restoration is replaced, the area is repaired again, or root canal treatment is planned.

How Long Does MTA Last?

There’s no number of years that applies to everyone, and how long the MTA lasts isn’t the same as how long the tooth lasts. With well-done treatment, a well-sealed restoration and regular check-ups, the tooth can keep working for many years.

The main factors are:

According to the AAE’s review, vital pulp treatments using calcium silicate-based materials have reported success rates of around 85 to 100 percent at 1–2 years of follow-up. These are short- to medium-term figures and don’t mean every patient will get the same result.

Can MTA Replace a Root Canal?

Sometimes. If the pulp is alive and able to heal, vital pulp treatment with MTA may mean the whole nerve doesn’t need to be removed.

But this doesn’t apply to every tooth. If the nerve is irreversibly damaged, has died or there’s infection around the root, a root canal is needed. The decision is made after an examination and X-ray. For more detail, see our root canal guide; we also cover whether every cavity needs a root canal in a separate article.

When to See a Dentist

Don’t put off an examination if you have pain that starts on its own, lingering sensitivity to hot and cold, swollen gums or a lost filling. The earlier you come in, the better the chance of saving the nerve.

At Ayla Dent, we assess dental complaints with a clinical examination and any imaging needed, then plan treatment to suit you. Book an appointment at our clinic in Bağcılar, or read more about general dentistry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does MTA treatment hurt?

Local anaesthetic is used when needed, with the aim of keeping you pain-free during the procedure. There may be mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards.

How many visits does it take?

It depends on the tooth. Some cases are done in one visit; if the MTA needs time to set or infection needs controlling, two or more visits may be planned.

Is an MTA filling the same as a root filling?

No. MTA is a material that can be used in some stages of root canal treatment, in vital pulp therapy or in root repair. Root canal treatment itself is a separate procedure in which the canals are cleaned and filled.

Can MTA darken the tooth?

Some formulations can turn the tooth grey or yellowish. The risk is lower with newer ones, and your dentist will take this into account when choosing a material, especially for front teeth.

Is MTA used for children?

Yes. It can be used in procedures like pulpotomy on baby teeth and in young adult teeth. For treatments for children, see our children’s dentistry page.

When is the filling or crown placed?

A permanent filling is usually placed in the same visit or soon after. Whether a crown is needed depends on how much tooth has been lost, and your dentist will plan it.

What if MTA treatment fails?

The tooth is reassessed. Depending on the problem, the restoration may be replaced, a root canal done or another approach taken. That’s why check-ups matter even without symptoms.

How much does MTA treatment cost?

It depends on the tooth, the procedure and the number of visits needed. We’ll give you clear information after the examination.
